Mission Statement

Johannes Brahms was a prominent holiday guest in the small fishing village of Pörtschach on the beautiful Lake Wörthersee from 1877 to 1879. ‘It is beautiful here, the melodies fly around so much that you have to be careful not to step on them!’ he wrote to his friends. In fact, Johannes Brahms, who was busy organising concerts in the cosmopolitan city of Vienna at the time, composed almost exclusively during the summer months. And his time in Pörtschach was particularly fruitful!
Today, some 150 years later, we not only remember the great composer’s visit and his works, but also perform his works at the place where they were created and try to produce lively art and music of the highest ‘Viennese’ standard for music-loving locals and guests in the spirit of the composer!
Wherever Johannes Brahms Society is written, classical music in Brahms’ spirit is inside. Furthermore, Brahms’ specific source of inspiration, the Carinthian song, is also commemorated in sound, and attempts are made to experience Brahms’ music itself as the foundation for new music (2nd Viennese School) and the latest music (e.g. as compulsory pieces for competitions, composers in residence).

In keeping with Brahms’ spirit, we refrain from ‘frills’ that pander to today’s sometimes common ‘sales-promoting’ trends and the mixing of music with showmanship.
Instead, each concert offers a lovingly designed atmosphere and a dignified introduction to the works with (almost) educational aspirations, promising you an unforgettable musical experience! In Pörtschach, a special ‘after concert’ culture is a matter of course (also in Brahms’ spirit). Put us to the test!
At our competition, which has been running successfully for 30 years, you can experience the best young musicians from around the world up close every September. In addition to the public evaluation, the final rounds also feature a public explanation of the jury’s decision! Exciting and unique worldwide! Be there! The final concert also offers you the opportunity to vote! A high-calibre, international team of directors is responsible for the programme, support and implementation of the events.
